  • How The Vatican Helped Hitler Become the Dictator Of Germany

On January 30, 1933 Adolph Hitler became chancellor of Germany. Although the Nazi Party never captured more than 37% of the national votes and they only held a minority of the cabinet posts and they held fewer than 50% of the seats in the Reichstag, Hitler and his Nazis began to consolidate their power. On February 27, l933 the Reichstag burned down and Hitler accused the communists of starting the fire. Furthermore, Hitler said this was a signal that the communist revolution had begun, and he asked the Reichstag to delegate its powers to him and give him dictatorial powers to stop the communist revolution.

In order to obtain this dictatorial power, the Reichstag had to approve it with a two thirds majority. Hitler sent Herman Goering and Strasser to talk to Monseigneur Kass who was the leader of the Catholic Center Party or {Zentrum}.

On March 26,1933 the Reichstag voted on the dictatorial power legislation, this legislation was called the Enabling Acts. Monseigneur Kass, with the approval of the Vatican, ordered all the members of the Catholic Center Party to vote in favor of the Enabling Acts.

With the support of the Catholic Center Party {Zentrum} Hitler got his two-third majority and he received his temporary dictatorial powers which he quickly turned into permanent dictatorial powers. Shortly after the Enabling Acts were passed, the Vatican ordered the Catholic Center Party to disband. In response to the Vatican directive, the Catholic Center Party dissolved itself in the summer of 1933.

In June of 1933 Hitler signed a Concordat with the Vatican, in which the Catholic Church swore allegiance to the Nazi regime.

Here are the textual words: ?I swear and promise to honor the legally constituted Nazi government. I will endeavor to avoid all detrimental acts which might endanger it.? {Article 16 of the Concordat}.

Franz Von Papen, a devout Catholic who was second in command behind Hitler was a close friend of Cardinal Pacelli, who was then Cardinal Secretary of State for the Vatican, and the future Pope Pius XII. At that time, Franz Von Papen said, ?The Third Reich is the first power which not only recognizes, but puts into practice the high principles of the Papacy.?
