For about 850 years, the Muslims ruled Spain and lived with the Jews and Christians in a spirit of tolerance and cooperation. However, when the Christians took over , the Muslims became the weaker segment of the populace. The Catholics became hateful and Muslims were either killed, converted or driven out of Spain.

In 782, the Emperor Karl (Charlemagne) had 4500 Saxons who were unwilling to convert to Christianity and thus were beheaded.
